Rierden studied at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, the Colorado Institute of Art, and the Art Institute of Seattle. He began his career as a stained-glass window designer, but immeresed himself in painting after working as an assistant for William Cummings. Rierden is known for his unique painting technique using alternating layers of egg tempera and wax, a method developed during the Renaissance and rarely used by modern artists. His colors recall the psychedelic blacklight posters of the 60s, which Rierden describes as a “shake, rattle and roll” effect on the viewer. Rierden’s paintings are represented in the collections of McDonalds Corporation, Microsoft, and Duncan Aviation. The artist currently maintains his studio in Orcas Island, Washington.
