Charles Rain grew up and was educated in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1933, following two years of study at the Art Institute of Chicago, he went to Europe for a year of study, chiefly in Berlin, but also in Paris and Vienna. During this period he experimented with painting styles, eventually moving from the abstract to the realistic manner associated with his production of more than forty years.
