Nebraska born, Jean Jessie Baker had relocated to Los Angeles by the time she was age 13, where she had a distinguished reputation as a portrait and poster painter. She also carved out a place in the Los Angeles community as a poet and violinist.

Her art teachers were Rudolph Schaeffer, Alfonzo Iannelli, and Carl Sprinchorn. Her association memberships included the Los Angeles Art League, Long Beach Art Association, and Women Artists of the West, with whom she exhibited in 1935.

She died in Los Angeles on July 2, 1944.

Jean Baker is not represented in the Museum of Nebraska Art collection.
