Artist Biography
In 1856, William Holbrook Beard traveled to Europe for artistic study where he met fellow Nebraska-related artists Sanford F. Gifford, Albert Bierstadt, and Worthington Whittredge. Upon his return to the United States, Beard became an illustrator and was regarded for his scenes of satirical works of animals subjects he imbued with “human characteristics” to provide social commentary. Seeking new inspiration, Beard traveled across the Midwest and through Nebraska. Letters to his wife reveal that Beard felt the landscape was monotonus and longed to see more buffalo.
