Artist Biography

As one of the leading contemporary glass artists, Therman Statom has both a national and international reputation. Onions (house) was created for MONA’s 2007 exhibition, Nebraska’s Glass Artists and is, along with his ladders, what the artist is well known for: the merging and crossing of disciplines utilizing glass as a base. Onions is comprised of a glass structure in the shape of a small house. On the outer walls of the house, Statom has painted imagery and attached bits of broken, blown, colorful glass. Within the house are three cubes constructed of mirrors and other bits and pieces of glass, both colored and clear, affixed to the surfaces. Statom’s work is akin to a quilt process – the artist pulls components, scraps, or various imagery that remind him of instances and experiences throughout his life and then cryptically combines them in one work to create a balanced, challenging assemblage that surpasses categorization.
