Artist Biography
In 2004, Stuart Chittenden left his career as an attorney in the United Kingdom and moved to Omaha, Nebraska, eventually founding his own company, Squishtalks, which works with organizations to foster better communication, connection, and culture. Because Chittenden does not have formal art training, his art practice challenges the distinctions between performance art and ordinary social interactions.
This photograph is from a performance art and humanities project titled “a couple of 830 mile long conversations,” during which Chittenden drove 830 miles across Nebraska, stopping in small towns to meet the people who live there. He documented these interactions through photographs, video, and audio recordings. As such, the physical record of these interactions, like this photograph, becomes emblematic but secondary to the performance.
