Artist Biography

Stones are part of our natural landscape. They are firm underfoot, are a durable building material, and the precious kind symbolize our deepest emotions. Sheila Hick’s Six Soft Stones have ubiquitous simple yet mysterious forms, they are loaded with meaning. Each stone has a history and connection to a person that has been preserved in a unique way. Do you have an emotional attachment to a favorite t-shirt or childhood dress? Do you hold on to an item of clothing that belonged to a close relative because the fabric retains a tiny part of them? Folded, compressed, and tightly wrapped with contrasting colored silken threads, these former garments carry within a loving narrative, and a concealed trinket.
