Artist Biography
As a life-long student and teacher, Leoda A. Davis advanced the arts at every opportunity through her creative studies, teaching, and community involvement. She was a founding member of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, a state-wide art club, and in 1978, her work Platte River Swirl was the first fiber artwork accepted into the Museum of Nebraska Art collection.
Developed as an investigation of textile as a medium for creative expression, Platte River Swirl combines hand and machine stitchery, off loom techniques, and a circular composition with design inspiration from aerial photography. Rather than faithfully reproducing the landscape, Davis focused on the rhythmic contours and tactile qualities revealed from an aerial perspective. Balanced between positive and negative space, Davis merged contemporary design with traditional stitchery and expanded the possibilities of the art form.
