Artist Biography
Raised by her grandparents on the Winnebago Reservation in northeast Nebraska, Stevens grew up creating objects from clay found in her backyard along the Missouri River. At thirteen, she was sent to boarding school in Flandreau, South Dakota and later attended the Haskell Institute (today the Haskell Indian Nations University) in Lawrence, Kansas before studying anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The study of anthropology introduced her to aboriginal art from around the world and provided a new sense of connectivity to her tribal background. Stevens then studied at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico with Hopi potter, Otellie Loloma and later devoted her career to the production of pottery. Stevens’ pottery ranges from forms that incorporate traditional tribal methods, sometimes including basket weaving, to those that are minimalist with decorative surfaces.
