Artist Biography
Pending Acquisition. In 1859, Francis Seth Frost accompanied fellow artists Albert Bierstadt and Henry Hitchings on the Lander Expedition, which brought them across the Nebraska Territory. The expedition's route followed the Little Blue River to the Platte River, by way of Fort Kearny, where the group camped before traveling up the North Platte River to Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and crossing the Continental Divide. This painting, depicting the Rocky Mountains, was completed after the artist returned to his East Coast studio. It serves as documentation of the journey that brought Frost across the Nebraska landscape and is one of the few works that he created after the Lander Expedition that survives today.
