Artist Biography

As both an artist and arts advocate, Anne Burkholder looked to the Nebraska landscape for inspiration and possibilities. Born and raised in the Nebraska Sandhills, Burkholder grew up with her attention focused on the expansive horizon line, and this fascination continued and evolved as she moved to Lincoln and earned her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Recognizing the need for community support and opportunities for collaborations for artists to thrive, she established The Burkholder Project in a quiet corner of downtown Lincoln known as the Historic Haymarket District in the 1980s. The first gallery with artist studios of its kind in the area, The Burkholder Project provided local artists with space to create, exhibit, and find community and began a period of revitalization throughout the Haymarket. Now considered the heart of Lincoln’s art scene, Burkholder has remained faithful to painting Nebraska landscapes for more than 70 years.
