Nebraska Now: Sandra Williams: Anthropocene Blues: Nature and the Social Imagination

Sandra Williams

Sandra Williams, Associate Professor of Art in the Art and Art History Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, creates two-dimensional cut-paper works that explore the concept of ecotone: an area where two communities meet and integrate. By focusing on flora, fauna, and figures and using folklore as a reference, Williams aims to look at the ecotone of nature and culture and their “resulting tension.” As the artist states, her Anthropocene Blues series, “blends the scientific and totemic understanding of the natural world, urging the viewer to value and conserve spaces and species that cannot be replaced…” Williams received a BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 and an MFA from The Ohio State University in 1999.
