Adornment

Exhibition open September 29, 2018 through February 3, 2019

September 29, 2018 – February 3, 2019
Adornment looks at how individuals and communities clothe, embellish, or alter their appearances through creative thought and artistic practices. The exhibition explores the ongoing need to create works as varied as filigreed jewelry, beaded traditional or contemporary Native American clothing, African American headdresses, tattoos, nail art, distinctive felt hats, fashion designs, and inspired opera and ballet costumes, among others. The work of over 35 individuals is presented including Cey Adams, Ruth Buol, Celeste Butler, Marcia Laging Cummings, Catherine Ferguson, Robert Hillestad, Jun Kaneko, 19th and 20th century Lakota art, Imagine Uhlenbrock, and Jette Vogt. Adornment raises questions such as: At what point does a creative endeavor become an artwork?
