Artist Biography
Siemon's Morning Light skillfully explores color complements in light and shadow that was the hallmark of late-nineteenth-century Impressionist painting. By placing large strokes of color side-by-side without blending them, Siemon painted this still life with loose detail to give the impression of potted plants, fruit, and sunlight streaming through the window. When viewed up close, the objects begin to lose the precise form that they maintain from a distance, and the large dabs of paint distract from seeing the composition as a whole. This effect was a tenet of Impressionism that continues to fascinate artists and viewers today.
