Artist Biography
Gregory Albracht was born in 1949 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He initially studied Philosophy at Regis College in Denver, Colorado, before discovering his passion for photography. In the summer of 1969, Albracht encountered a portfolio of black-and-white photographs. As he states “It was in that moment photography took hold of me and I discovered what was meant to be my life’s work.”
Albracht’s images are regarded as windows to a timeless Western landscape, inspired by places where humans live in deep connection to the animals and land. He does not attempt uniformity throughout his photographs but rather focuses on a unique expression of the moment in which it’s taken. He also experiments with a variety of toners and photograph papers, each responding differently to different techniques to find one that best sets the mood.
Throughout his career, he has had more than eighty shows all over the western region, earning him over twenty-five regional and national awards. In addition, his photographs have been exhibited in museum collections throughout the country, including Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, and Washington, D.C. Gregory Albracht continues to live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
